Nonviolent Communication for Everyday

I’m often asked to say a bit more on my website about what empathic, nonviolent communication is — since it is the basic framework I use in my individual and couples coaching, and in mediation. I’m pleased to share with you here an interview I recently did with my dear friend and colleague, Dr. Kim Quinn, where we explore this effective and transformational communication framework.

To put it simply, nonviolent communication is a practical tool to help us develop presence and connection. Through this practice, we enhance our capacity to seek and foster understanding, rather than getting caught up in agreeing or disagreeing. The basic process is simple: making an observation, without judgement, and identifying the needs behind our feelings. Just starting there helps us actively listen to the other person and deepen our connection to them, and to ourselves.
